A Chinese Shopping Trip

Today I headed to my favorite Chinese strip mall, on John R. at Whitcomb in Madison Heights. That's about a quarter mile South of 14 mile Road. Along with Mandarin Dining, which was my favorite restaurant for a while, there's China Merchandise:

...which looked like they'd done a lot of cleaning up, rearranging and getting rid of old stock. Much improved. I picked up a variety of vegetables and noodles, dry and fresh, Chinese bacon, and some giant oyster mushrooms and tofu. I didn't stop at Zhang BBQ:

..which has delicious roast duck, roast pork, banjo chicken, and things like barbecued pig's tails that you might not be ready for if you're not Chinese. When I was in grad school, some Chinese friends introduced me to one of their favorite communal meals, which involved freshly cooked noodles, steamed Gai Lan (a green vegetables), served with roast duck or roast pork and some oyster sauce. This is where I usually buy the meat when I make this dish today.

I did stop at Tai Pan bakery:

...for some assorted buns for lunch. I didn't see any egg tarts today, which was a bit disappointing.
